Cabin 1828 is an Ocean View Balcony on Deck 12 of Freedom of the Seas. You are far forward. You are at the top of the passenger decks, so the pools and the open air are just up the stairs, and you feel the ship move more than anyone below you. You are well out towards the end of the hull, which is where pitching is felt hardest. Right up in the bow, a head sea can send a shudder through the hull that midship guests never feel at all. It is 4 cabins along the corridor to Vitality at Sea Spa. Close enough to be useful, far enough that it should not keep you awake. The spa and salon forward on deck 12, sitting above the gym. Seventeen treatment rooms, a thermal suite, a Rasul room, sauna and steam, and a teen treatment menu for thirteen to seventeen. Worth knowing: designed to be silent and mostly is. What a neighbouring cabin gets is back of house rather than guests: early staff setup, linen carts in the corridor and water handling for the thermal suite. Quiet scores 5 out of 10. There is enough going on nearby that a light sleeper should think about it. For getting about, 7 out of 10.

Counting from the bow, it is the 21st cabin position of 33 along Deck 12. You are about as central as the corridor gets, so it is a similar walk whichever way you turn out of your door. Deck 12 also has Lime and Coconut, Arcade, Adventure Ocean and Nursery on it. There are 50 cabins along this deck, so the corridor is short and rarely busy.

An Ocean View Balcony gives you 188 square feet. The balcony adds another 46 on top of that. A balcony buys you outside space of your own and, on sea days, somewhere to sit that is not the pool deck. It is the step up most people make, and the one they find hardest to give up again.

Worth knowing before you book: Crown and Anchor pays one cruise point a night at this grade. A suite pays two, and so does sailing solo on a double occupancy fare, which is the cheaper of the two routes if you are travelling alone anyway. Against the rest of the ship it is noisier than three quarters of the 1,963 cabins on board and livelier in a swell than most of them. It is a poor fit for anyone who wakes when a door closes and anyone who feels motion badly.
