Allure of the Seas is an Oasis-class ship that entered service for Royal Caribbean International in 2010. One design decision explains almost everything else about her. The superstructure is split down the middle for much of its length, so the centre of the ship opens to the sky instead of enclosing a single atrium. That void is filled with neighbourhoods: seven districts, each with its own character and its own crowd. She carries about 5,492 passengers at double occupancy and over 6,700 when full. She sails mainly Caribbean itineraries from Florida, with a Mediterranean season out of Barcelona following a refit in 2025.
The neighbourhood idea works. Central Park is a genuine open-air garden with thousands of live plants, ringed by 150 Central Park, Chops Grille and the wine bar. The Boardwalk runs aft past a hand-carved carousel, Playmakers and the rock-climbing walls, ending at the AquaTheater, an open-air diving and high-wire venue that is still among the more ambitious things at sea. The Royal Promenade absorbs the indoor bustle. The 2025 amplification added the Ultimate Abyss slide, the Perfect Storm waterslides, Splashaway Bay and a rebuilt pool deck.
Criticism is consistent and fair. Cruise Critic's editors rate the ship five out of five, yet the same review flags rampant extra charges and long dining queues. The 2025 refit left the staterooms alone, and reviewers have called them dated and tired, noting that the library and card room were removed to make space for more cabins. Windjammer is hard work at peak times. Main dining room menus attract the word uninspired. More cabins means more people in the same lifts.
This suits families, first-time Royal Caribbean passengers, and anyone who wants the ship itself to be the destination. It suits people who will actually use the slides, the FlowRider and the shows. It does not suit anyone looking for quiet, for understated design, or for a fare that covers most of what they will want to do.
All of which matters most when you choose a cabin. The neighbourhood balconies are the defining decision. Central Park view balconies on decks 10 to 14 are the calmest inward-facing option, though you get live music in the evenings, no sea view, and a direct sightline to the cabins opposite. Boardwalk balconies on decks 8 to 14 are livelier and often cheaper. The carousel music and bell begin around ten in the morning, AquaTheater shows run late into the evening on performance nights, and Playmakers sits below. Aft ocean-view cabins near the AquaTheater catch the same sound. Cabins directly under the pool and sports decks pick up scraping loungers and early activity. Allure of the Seas is the second ship of Royal Caribbean's Oasis class, a near-twin of Oasis of the Seas built at the same STX Europe Turku Shipyard in Finland and delivered in late 2010 at a cost of around US$1.2 billion. Constructed to essentially the same 225,000-gross-ton, roughly 362-metre design, she was measured at a few centimetres longer than her elder sister, a distinction that let Royal Caribbean claim she was fractionally the largest cruise ship in the world. She carries more than 5,400 guests at double occupancy across sixteen decks, served by some 2,100 crew.
Like her sister she is organized into seven neighborhoods, including the live-planted Central Park, the carnival-themed Boardwalk with its hand-carved carousel, and the sternside AquaTheater. Among her signature attractions are a full ice-skating rink, a 1,380-seat main theater that has staged Broadway productions, twin FlowRider surf simulators, a zip-line, and the Ultimate Abyss dry slide added in later refits. A 2025 renovation refreshed her with new waterslides and dining and entertainment venues, extending her appeal to a new generation of guests.
Allure of the Seas is notable for the whimsical choice of godmother made at her 2010 christening: the fictional ogre-princess Fiona from the DreamWorks 'Shrek' films, a nod to a promotional partnership, making her one of the few major ships with an animated character as godmother. Her maiden voyage departed from Fort Lauderdale in December 2010.
After years of Caribbean service from Florida and Texas homeports, she sailed a Mediterranean season from Barcelona following her 2025 refit, and she now sails Caribbean itineraries from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Registered in Nassau, Bahamas, she remains in active service, a mainstay of the Oasis class more than a decade after her debut.
Getting around - smart elevators: Royal Caribbean has been rolling out destination-dispatch "smart elevators" across its largest ships, including the Oasis class. Where fitted, guests select their deck at a console outside the elevators and are directed to a specific lettered car (A, B, C, and so on) rather than pressing a button inside the car; the system groups riders by destination to reduce waiting time.
