Carnival Elation

Carnival Elation is a cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line, built at the Helsinki New Shipyard of Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Finland under yard number 491. Ordered as part of Carnival's ambitious 1990s expansion, the vessel was assembled in the Finnish yard's covered building dock, floated out on January 4, 1998, and delivered later that same year. She originally entered service simply as Elation, carrying the Carnival prefix on her name only after a 2007 fleetwide rebranding turned her into Carnival Elation. Constructed at a cost of roughly 300 million US dollars, she represented one of the later units in a highly successful series of near-identical sister ships that helped define Carnival's mass-market Fun Ship identity.

She belongs to the Fantasy class, the largest single class of cruise ships Carnival ever built, comprising eight vessels delivered between 1990 and 1998. Elation was the seventh of these eight ships, following in the wake of Fantasy, Ecstasy, Sensation, Fascination, Imagination and Inspiration, and preceding the final sister, Paradise. As a Fantasy-class ship she shares the flamboyant interior design language of the late naval architect Joe Farcus, whose themed public rooms, dramatic multideck atrium and neon-accented promenades became a hallmark of the line. Despite being built to a common template, each sister carried her own decorative theme and a name evoking an uplifting mood.

One of the vessel's most historically significant features is her propulsion system. Elation was among the very first cruise ships in the world to be fitted with Azipod electric propulsion, a podded system developed by ABB in which the electric drive motor sits inside a submerged, steerable pod beneath the hull rather than driving a conventional fixed shaft and rudder arrangement. She is fitted with two such Azipod units powered by a diesel-electric plant of six Wartsila engines. The technology, which markedly improves maneuverability and frees up interior hull volume that would otherwise be occupied by shaft machinery, went on to become an industry standard, making Elation and her near-sister Paradise notable pioneers of a now-ubiquitous design.

In terms of dimensions and layout, Carnival Elation measures approximately 70,400 gross tons as originally built, a figure later increased to around 71,900 gross tons following major refurbishment. She is roughly 855 feet (about 261 meters) long, and after later modifications her superstructure grew to fourteen decks, of which eleven are accessible to guests. Her original double-occupancy passenger capacity of around 2,050 was raised to approximately 2,130 as additional cabins were added, while she carries a crew of about 900 and cruises at a service speed of roughly 21 knots. Onboard facilities include multiple swimming pools, numerous whirlpools, and more than a dozen lounges and bars.

The ship's top decks are anchored by Carnival WaterWorks, an open-air aqua park that features a lengthy Twister waterslide stretching roughly 300 feet, a pair of shorter racing mini-slides, and a splash zone for younger guests. Elsewhere on the recreation decks are freshwater pools with whirlpool spas, a poolside stage, mini-golf, a combination sports court, and the adults-only Serenity retreat for quieter relaxation. Below decks, the entertainment complex offers a main showroom, the Punchliner Comedy Club, a piano bar, a nightclub, and the casino, reflecting the ship's emphasis on all-day and evening activity typical of the Fun Ship experience.

Dining and bar offerings were substantially expanded when the ship received Carnival's Fun Ship 2.0 program of enhancements around 2014. Complimentary meals are served in two main dining rooms and a large Lido buffet, supplemented by a sushi counter, a coffee and pastry cafe, and a 24-hour pizzeria and room service. The 2.0 upgrades brought Guy's Burger Joint, developed with television personality Guy Fieri, and the poolside BlueIguana Cantina serving tacos and burritos, both offered at no extra charge. Signature bars include the RedFrog Rum Bar with its ThirstyFrog Red house beer, the BlueIguana Tequila Bar, and the cocktail-focused Alchemy Bar styled as a vintage apothecary.

Elation was christened by godmother Shari Arison, a member of the Arison family long associated with Carnival's ownership, and she completed her maiden voyage on March 20, 1998. Over her career she has been based at a succession of home ports, beginning on the US West Coast at Los Angeles, then moving to Galveston, San Diego, Mobile and New Orleans, before settling for an extended period at Jacksonville, Florida, where she has specialized in short four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas, with occasional operations out of Port Canaveral. She underwent significant dry-dock refurbishments, including work in October 2017 that added an extra deck and reconfigured public spaces, and further updates in early 2020.

Across her decades of service the ship has been involved in a number of notable events, including a September 2017 rescue at sea during Hurricane Irma and later onboard incidents that drew news coverage. As of the mid-2020s Carnival Elation remains an active member of the Carnival fleet, continuing to sail short Bahamas itineraries from Jacksonville and serving as one of the last operating examples of the once-numerous Fantasy class.
