Carnival Pride

Carnival Pride is a cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line, built by the Finnish shipbuilder Kvaerner Masa-Yards at its Helsinki New Shipyard. Constructed as yard number 500, the vessel represented an investment of roughly 375 million US dollars. Her keel was laid on March 30, 2000, and the completed hull was floated out and formally launched on March 29, 2001. Following outfitting and sea trials, the ship was delivered to Carnival on December 12, 2001, ready to begin her career at the start of the 2002 season. She joined a fleet that was expanding rapidly during that era of the company's growth.

The ship belongs to the Spirit class, a group of mid-sized vessels whose lead ship, Carnival Spirit, entered service in 2001. Her near sisters include Carnival Legend and Carnival Miracle, along with two closely related ships built for the affiliated Costa Cruises brand, Costa Atlantica and Costa Mediterranea. The Spirit-class design was notable for combining a relatively slender profile with a taller superstructure, allowing the ships to transit the original locks of the Panama Canal while still offering a wide range of amenities. This flexibility made them well suited to long-distance repositioning and to itineraries reaching ports that larger vessels could not easily serve.

Carnival Pride measures approximately 88,500 gross tons and stretches about 963 feet (roughly 293 meters) in length, with a beam of about 106 feet (approximately 32 meters) and a draft of around 25.5 feet. She carries twelve passenger decks and is designed to accommodate about 2,124 guests at standard double occupancy, rising to well over 2,600 when upper berths are filled, along with a crew of roughly 930. Her interiors were shaped by longtime Carnival designer Joe Farcus, whose decorative scheme drew on the art and imagery of the Renaissance, giving the public rooms an elaborate, art-inspired character in keeping with the exuberant styling for which the line's ships of that period were known.

For propulsion the vessel uses a diesel-electric arrangement, with a bank of six Wartsila diesel generators producing on the order of 62,370 kilowatts of electrical power. This drives two ABB Azipod propulsion units, each rated at about 17.6 megawatts, which are mounted beneath the stern and can rotate to provide both thrust and steering, improving maneuverability and eliminating the need for conventional rudders. This machinery gives the ship a service speed of around 22 knots. Above the waterline, the top decks feature the amenities typical of the class, including swimming pools, hot tubs, a spa and fitness area, sports facilities, and a waterslide added during later upgrades, together with a retractable-roof pool area that allows use in variable weather.

Onboard dining and entertainment venues carry their own themed names. The principal sit-down restaurant is the Normandie Restaurant, while the reservation-only steakhouse, originally opened as David's, now operates as the Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse. Casual meals are served at the Mermaid's Grille buffet and at a cluster of quick-service outlets that, following Carnival's Fun Ship 2.0 enhancements, came to include Guy's Burger Joint, the BlueIguana Cantina, Bonsai Sushi, a pizzeria, a deli, and Swirls for frozen treats. The ship's bars and lounges likewise carry distinct identities, ranging from the main show lounge and secondary entertainment lounges to specialty bars, among them a tribute space honoring members of the armed forces. A multi-story atrium anchors the interior and serves as the social heart of the vessel.

The ship was christened on January 7, 2002, at Port Canaveral, Florida, with former NASA astronaut Tamara Jernigan serving as godmother, and she set out on her maiden voyage from that port later the same month. For her first several years Carnival Pride was based on the West Coast at Long Beach, California, sailing week-long Mexican Riviera itineraries from 2002 until 2009. In April 2009 she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, a home port with which she became strongly identified, offering year-round cruises to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the ports of Canada and New England. She also spent periods sailing from Tampa, Florida, including a stint from late 2014 into 2015 and again from November 2021.

Over the years the ship has undergone several refits. A dry docking in October 2014 included the installation of exhaust-gas scrubbers to meet tightening emissions standards, and a further refurbishment took place around 2019 to refresh cabins and public areas. Most recently, Carnival Pride completed a lengthy dry dock at Freeport, Grand Bahama, returning to service in Baltimore in April 2026 with updated spaces such as a refreshed casino and boutique. Her operating history has not been without incident: a passenger went missing during a voyage in December 2004, and in May 2016 the ship struck a pier while docking in Baltimore, causing a gangway to collapse, though no injuries were reported.

As of 2026 Carnival Pride remains in active service and continues to operate primarily out of Baltimore, offering roughly week-long voyages that combine the Bahamas and Bermuda with visits to Carnival's newer private destinations, alongside occasional longer Carnival Journeys sailings. More than two decades after her delivery, she endures as one of the mainstays of Carnival's East Coast operation and a familiar presence for cruisers departing from the Mid-Atlantic region.
