Carnival Sunshine

Carnival Sunshine is a cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line that first entered service in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny. The vessel was constructed by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri at its yard in Monfalcone, near Trieste, and was launched on November 15, 1995, at a reported cost of about 409 million US dollars. When she was delivered and began her maiden voyage on November 24, 1996, she became a landmark in the industry as the first passenger ship ever built to surpass 100,000 gross tons, and she held the title of the world's largest passenger vessel until 1998. As originally built, the ship measured roughly 102,000 gross tons, stretched about 272 meters (893 feet) in length with a beam near 35.5 meters (116 feet), rose across twelve passenger decks, and carried in the region of 2,600 guests at double occupancy along with a crew of roughly 1,150. As Carnival Destiny she sailed Caribbean itineraries for well over a decade, establishing the general layout that later Carnival ships would build upon.

By the early 2010s the aging vessel was selected for one of the most extensive transformations Carnival had ever undertaken. In a dry dock at Trieste, Italy, the ship underwent a comprehensive rebuild costing about 155 million US dollars, work that was completed in the spring of 2013. The project went well beyond a routine refurbishment, adding an entire deck of accommodations and roughly 180 new staterooms, reconfiguring public rooms, and folding in the full suite of Fun Ship 2.0 dining, bar, and entertainment concepts that Carnival was rolling out across its fleet. To mark the scale of the change the ship was rechristened, and her inaugural voyage in the new guise was celebrated in May 2013. A formal renaming ceremony followed later that year, held on November 17, 2013, in New Orleans, cementing her identity as Carnival Sunshine and giving rise to what Carnival subsequently described as its Sunshine class.

Following the 2013 rebuild the ship retained her fundamental hull dimensions while gaining capacity and amenities. Her measured tonnage remained around 102,000 gross tons, and her length stayed close to 272 meters, but the added deck brought her total to thirteen passenger decks and lifted her guest capacity to roughly 3,000, with figures around 3,000 to 3,006 passengers at double occupancy commonly cited. The extensive additions to the upper decks and interior reduced her service speed slightly, to about 21 knots. Her propulsion follows the diesel-electric arrangement typical of large Fincantieri cruise ships of her era, driving twin propellers, with bow thrusters to aid maneuvering in port. The vessel is registered in Panama and flies the Panamanian flag.

The rebuild concentrated many of its most visible changes on the open top decks, where Carnival installed a cluster of signature attractions. The centerpiece is WaterWorks, a colorful aqua park boasting some forty interactive water features and an enclosed Twister slide measuring around 334 feet in length, among the longest in the fleet at the time. Nearby, a recreation zone branded SportSquare gathered a suspended ropes course marketed as the SkyCourse, along with mini golf, a jogging track, a basketball court, and outdoor games. At the opposite end of the experience spectrum, the ship gained Serenity, described as Carnival's first three-deck-high adults-only retreat, featuring shaded loungers, whirlpools, a waterfall feature, and a small pool. A large poolside LED screen, part of Carnival's Seaside Theatre concept, provided outdoor films and events.

Dining and drinking venues were likewise expanded to match the fleet's newer standards. The rebuild introduced the Italian family-style restaurant Cucina del Capitano and its companion Pizzeria del Capitano, the Far Eastern JiJi Asian Kitchen, and the reservation-only Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, alongside complimentary poolside outlets including Guy's Burger Joint, developed with chef Guy Fieri, and the BlueIguana Cantina for Mexican fare. The bar program grew to include the craft-cocktail Alchemy Bar, the Caribbean-themed RedFrog Pub, the BlueIguana Tequila Bar, an EA Sports themed bar, a library bar with wine dispensers, and the JavaBlue coffee cafe. Entertainment offerings such as Playlist Productions stage shows and the Punchliner Comedy Club rounded out the transformed guest experience.

For much of her second life Carnival Sunshine became closely associated with the US Southeast. From May 2019 she was based year-round at Charleston, South Carolina, where she operated shorter four- to nine-night sailings to the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean, becoming a familiar fixture of that city's cruise trade for several years. The choice of a smaller, drive-to home port fit the ship's positioning as an accessible, family-oriented vessel. She continued to receive periodic maintenance and refurbishment during this period as part of Carnival's routine dry-dock cycles, keeping her attractions and public spaces current.

The ship's most widely reported incident came in late May 2023, when she encountered severe weather while returning to Charleston from a Bahamas cruise. Over the weekend of roughly May 27 to 28, storms and heavy seas caused the vessel to roll and list sharply, and passengers described alarming conditions in which the ship at times felt as though it had heeled far over onto its side. Videos circulated widely on social media showing water intruding into interior areas, furnishings sliding across cabins, and bottles smashing in one of the bars, while some guests were visibly distressed. Water damage affected a number of crew cabins, and shipboard medical staff assisted a small number of people with minor issues, though no serious injuries were reported. Carnival stated that guests aboard remained safe and acknowledged that the weather had delayed the ship's arrival and the following voyage's boarding.

Carnival Sunshine remains in active service with Carnival Cruise Line. After years sailing from Charleston, the ship was redeployed, with reporting indicating a shift to a year-round home port at Norfolk, Virginia, beginning in early 2025, from which she continues to run Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries. Now approaching three decades since her original delivery as Carnival Destiny, she stands as a notable survivor of the first generation of ships to breach the 100,000-ton threshold, kept relevant by the sweeping 2013 reinvention that gave her a new name, a new class designation, and the contemporary attractions she carries today.
