Mein Schiff 3

Mein Schiff 3 matters less for what she is than for what she began. TUI Cruises, a 2007 joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Group, had started with two second hand Celebrity ships, taken on because newbuilding capacity was scarce. The contract signed with STX Finland in September 2011 changed that. Delivered from the Turku yard on 22 May 2014 for a reported 360 million euros, at 97,000 gross tons and close to 300 metres, she was the first ship the line drew for itself: 1,253 cabins, 2,500 lower berths, roughly 1,000 crew. The defining fact is the market she was built for. German is the working language on board, and the food and entertainment are shaped for German speaking guests, not adapted for them.

The interiors were split between CM Design, Wilson Butler Architects, Tihany Design and Tillberg Design. Wilson Butler took the open decks, the main theatre and the Klanghaus, a purpose built concert hall billed as the first at sea. Tihany took the aft, where the class signature sits: the Diamant, a faceted glass structure enclosing the Große Freiheit lounge and restaurant, angled panels that give the ship a recognisable profile and the room inside an unmatched view. The dining roster that became the fleet standard starts here, with the Atlantik restaurant, the Japanese Hanami, the steak room Richards, GOSCH Sylt for fish and the Anckelmannsplatz buffet. Sport and wellness carry unusual weight, anchored by a 25 metre pool among the longest afloat and the SPA & Meer complex. Three sisters followed on the same platform between 2015 and 2017, which is the operator's own verdict on the design.

Criticism is where the English language record thins to almost nothing, because the ship is not sold into English speaking markets. Two points are documented rather than inferred. The first is repetition: TUI built three near copies of this hull in the three years after her, so a guest moving between them finds a fleet that varies in detail rather than in character. The second is that the fare, generous by mainstream standards, stops short of premium spirits and the specialty covers, so the all inclusive promise has edges. One operational incident is on record, in June 2018 at Honningsvag in northern Norway, where strong winds tore the ship from her moorings into the dock. Nothing accessible suggests a design fault.

Guests comfortable in German, who value a premium fare that folds food and most drinks into the ticket price, and who want serious wellness and sport facilities, are well served here. An English speaker with no German should go in clear eyed. Announcements, the daily programme, stage entertainment and menus are in German, as is the social life of the ship. Crew will help, but the experience is not translated.

**What this means for choosing a cabin.** The cabin mix is the strongest practical argument for her. With 1,253 cabins for 2,500 lower berths and most fitted with balconies, a balcony is close to the default rather than an upgrade, which changes the value calculation against ships dominated by inside cabins. Position still matters. Cabins beneath the open pool decks pick up deck furniture noise early, and those nearest the aft entertainment block sit under late music. Forward cabins are closest to the bow thrusters, used heavily in port. Mid ship low down is the steadiest choice in open water.
